MOSCOW : US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is in Moscow to meet with senior Russian officials and to join top international diplomats in assessing the stalled Mideast peace process.

Clinton arrived in the Russian capital Thursday morning after an overnight flight from Washington. She is to be joined later by the Obama administration’s special envoy for Mideast peace, George Mitchell.

Clinton aides said she will discuss a range of issues with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (SEHR’-gay LAHV’-rahf) on Thursday, including negotiations on a new U.S.-Russian nuclear weapons treaty.

On Friday Clinton will participate in a meeting of the so-called Quartet of Mideast peacemakers, comprising the U.S., Russia, the United Nations and the European Union.

MIAMI : Three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova will miss the Sony Ericsson Open, as will women’s world number two Dinara Safina and 2008 men’s champion Nikolay Davydenko, organizers said Wednesday.

The Miami tournament is the second of prestigious back-to-back hardcourt tournaments in the United States, coming immediately after this week’s event at Indian Wells, California.

Sharapova, who won the WTA title in Memphis in February, had been slated to play in Miami for the first time since 2007.

But an MRI exam on the sore right elbow that hindered her as she made a third-round exit in Indian Wells showed a bone bruise that is likely to sideline the Russian for three to six weeks.

Safina, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, remains sidelined by the back injury that forced her out of the Australian Open.

Davydenko is out with a broken left wrist. He had played one match at Indian Wells and then pulled out after an MRI revealed the wrist he injured in Rotterdam last month was, in fact, fractured.

The phrase “March Madness” was coined by Henry V. Porter in 1939 to describe an Illinois high school basketball tourney. Brent Musburger first used it during NCAA coverage in 1982 causing a legal battle almost as insane as the playoffs.

Alex Chilton (born William Alexander Chilton, December 28, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee – March 17, 2010 in New Orleans)  was an American songwriter, guitarist, singer and producer best known for his work with the pop-music  bands the Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton’s early commercial sales success in the 1960s as a teen vocalist for the Box Tops was not repeated in later years with Big Star and in his indie music solo career on small labels, but he did draw a loyal following in the indie and alternative music fields.

Chilton said in the September 1994 issue of Guitar Player that he considered himself a “musical performer, not a songwriter” and that some of his songs sound only “half-baked” to him. Nonetheless, his compositions have been performed by a number of artists, including This Mortal Coil.

The Replacements wrote the song “Alex Chilton” in his honor, for their 1987 album Pleased to Meet Me.

SINGAPORE : Southeast Asia’s first Universal Studios theme park opened Thursday in Singapore as the city-state vies to become a top regional tourist destination.

The park is part of Resort World Sentosa — built by Malaysia’s Genting Bhd for $4.4 billion — which opened Singapore’s first casino last month.

Singapore is counting on Resorts World and a Las Vegas Sands casino-resort due to open April 27 to attract tourists as the country shifts its economy to services from manufacturing.

Universal Studios parks are also in Hollywood, California, Orlando, Florida and Osaka, Japan.

CHANDIGARH INDIA : For Haryanvis, it could well be time to rise and take note, if an INLD MLA’s remark in the assembly is to be believed. During his speech, three-time MLA from Kalayat Rampal Majra said the “sexual rate” of Haryana is falling. And, this has raised the hackles of many women MLAs who asked him to mind his language.

Majra, while speaking on the skewed sex ratio in the state on Monday, had actually mentioned “sexual rate” rather than “sex ratio.”

“Bahut kosiso ke baad bhi state me sexual rate nahi bad raha hai. Yeh chinta ki baat hai aur government ko is par aur dhyan dena chahiye (Sexual rate in the state is not improving despite all efforts. This is a matter of concern and the government should pay attention to this),” said Majra.

State health minister Geeta Bhukal, along with ruling party MLAs Anita Yadav and Sharda Rathore, made strong objection to the use of the term “sexual rate”. “Please, think of what you are talking in the assembly,” Bhukal said repeatedly. But Majra continued to speak, ignoring the objections raised by female MLAs as well finance minister Ajay Singh Yadav.

Majra, 55, a law graduate, is considered a part of the INLD thinktank led by former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala.

Later, parliamentary affairs minister Randeep Singh Surjewala, who was present during the speech by Majra, told TOI: “It was a slip of tongue and it is best to be ignored. However, the words have not been expunged”

When The Times of India contacted Majra, he said: “Maine to kaha tha ki sexual ratio national average 933 ke mukabale Haryana mein sirf 863 hai (I had stated that the sexual ratio — read sex ratio — is just 861 in Haryana in comparison to the national average of 933). They are launching one after another scheme, but despite that there is no improvement in the sexual ratio,” he repeated.

Sandra Bullock has pulled out of a trip to London for the premiere of her film ‘The Blind Side’ for ‘unforeseen personal reasons.’ Bullock’s decision comes amidst rumors of marital trouble.

In a statement released by Warner Bros, Bullock says: “Due to unforeseen personal reasons a trip abroad to support The Blindside has been deemed impossible at this time. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your continued support of the film.”

Normally publicity shy, Jesse James had walked the red carpet with Sandra during this year’s awards season that saw her win an Oscar for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for The Blind Side. Bullock also won a Gloden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance.
