Israel Not To Change Policy Towards Construction: Peres

17 Time Viewed

Israel Not To Change Policy Towards Construction PeresEuropean Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton on Thursday met with Israeli President Shimon Peres who said that Israel’s policy towards construction in Jerusalem should not be changed.
“For 40 years there was a certain pattern which is that we build in the suburbs which are basically Jewish, and we didn’t build in the suburbs which are basically Arabs. That was done by all governments. It was accepted by everybody including, in fact, the Palestinians. It never disturbed the negotiations. I think that we have to continue the same policy,” said Peres.
During their private meeting in Peres’ residence in Jerusalem, Ashton — on a first visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories since she took office — said the aim of her trip is to support the peace process.

“I’ve come with two purposes in mind: the first is to support the peace process and to ensure that the European Union plays its part in support of that process, and to have the opportunity to discuss the issues of concern with the leadership here and also to have the opportunity to visit some of the projects that we’re supporting.

And my second purpose is to recognise the bilateral relationship, especially economically,” Ashton told Peres.
Ashton’s visit came as tensions between Palestinians and Israel peaked with violent incidents erupting in and around Jerusalem.

Israel angered the Palestinians and touched off a spat with US President Barack Obama’s administration after announcing plans, during a visit by Vice President Joe Biden last week, to build 1,600 homes for Jews near East Jerusalem, in West Bank territory it annexed after a 1967 war.

UK Launches Human Rights Report

15 Time Viewed

UK Launches Human Rights ReportDavid Miliband launched 2009 report on human rights in central London.

He said the Foreign Office report ensured that “the most oppressive governments who refuse to be held to account by their own people, they are at least held to account by the international community.”

The report highlighted three issues: the “increasing harassment of defence lawyers; the treatment of detainees in relation to ethnic unrest… and the detention of human rights defenders and political dissidents.”

“A worrying number of people were imprisoned in 2009 for attempting to exercise their right to freedom of expression,” it said. “Officials from the British Embassy in Beijing made repeated efforts to attend the trials of individuals in priority cases but were denied access. “Increasingly, the authorities are using criminal charges to shut down the activities of human rights defenders.”

Miliband said London would continue to push for sanctions against “the most oppressive states such as Burma and Zimbabwe”.

The 192-page report highlighted 22 “countries of concern”: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Colombia, Cuba, North Korea, the DR Congo, Iran, Iraq, Israel and the Occupied Territories, Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. The report said it had been a “particularly grim year” in Iran while there were “signs of considerable progress” in Iraq.

US, Russia Clash Over Iran Nuke Plant

US, Russia Clash Over Iran Nuke PlantRejecting American pressure, Russia announced the planned launch this summer of Iran’s first, Russian-built nuclear power plant.

Russian Premier Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow would start up Tehran’s first and only nuclear power plant this summer. Moscow has been helping Iran build the Bushehr facility since 1995, but work has been delayed several times.

The statement of Russian Premier came at a time when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is in Moscow for talks on the Middle East and a stalled US-Russia nuclear arms reduction treaty. Russia’s foreign minister, gave Mrs Clinton short shrift and argued that making Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant operational would keep Tehran engaged with the international community.

Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Shrugs Off Obama No-Show

Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Shrugs Off Obama No-ShowSYDNEY : Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Friday shrugged off US President Barack Obama’s decision to postpone next week’s visit, saying he would be welcome any time.

Rudd said he had spoken to Obama about the move to reschedule the trip as the president wrestles with landmark healthcare legislation, and hailed his close relationship with the American leader.

“I’m going to be very happy any time the president chooses to visit,” Rudd told the Seven Network TV station.

“I know President Obama pretty well. It would be nice to have him and Michelle and the kids.

“I spoke to him on the phone this morning: he’d like to have a more relaxed visit than the 24-hour whip in, whip out that the last one had come down to.”

Obama had already delayed his visit and trimmed it from three days to one, opting to leave his wife Michelle and two daughters behind. The tour, also taking in Guam and Indonesia, has been put back until June.

Rudd, who has also seen legislation blocked by the Australian Senate, said he sympathised with Obama’s “massive” healthcare project and described the US leader as “a lot of fun”.

“We talk from time to time and he’s got a great sense of humour but it would be breaching all protocols to go to the content of conversation,” he said.

“But it’s a good relationship and he’s doing

Pregnant Women May Be Far More At Risk From Swine Flu

16 Time Viewed

Pregnant Women May Be Far More At Risk From Swine FluSYDNEY: Pregnant women may be far more at risk from swine flu than thought, according to a survey published on Friday that was carried out in Australia and New Zealand.

An investigation carried out among American women between April and May last year, in the first month of the H1N1 virus’ outbreak, suggested pregnant women were four times likelier to develop severe illness requiring hospitalisation compared with non-pregnant counterparts.

But the new paper, published online by the British Medical Journal (www.bmj.com), found in a small sample that the risk of critical illness was between seven and 13 times as much.

From June 1 to August 31 last year, 209 women of child-bearing age were admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in Australia and New Zealand with confirmed swine flu, 64 of whom were either pregnant or had recently birth.

The fact that almost one in three of the admissions were women who were pregnant or post-partum was significant, says the paper.

When extrapolated to the child-bearing population of both countries, a pregnant or post-partum woman with H1N1 was more than seven times likelier to be admitted to an ICU compared to a non-pregnant counterpart who also had flu.

In the case of flu-infected women who were more than 20 weeks’ pregnant, ICU admission was 13 times higher than a non-pregnant, infected counterpart.

The study also showed high rates of ventilator and oxygen use to help the pregnant women breathe.

Seven of the women died, four babies were stillborn and three died in infancy.

Of the surviving births, 22 were pre-term and 32 needed treatment at a neonatal intensive care unit.

None of the women had been vaccinated against seasonal flu, despite recommendations that pregnant women be immunised.

In an editorial, Stephen Lapinsky, a professor of critical-care medicine at the University of Toronto in Canada, said mortality from H1N1 during pregnancy seemed high, although not as bad as in previous flu pandemics.

In the 1918-9 outbreak of so-called Spanish flu, which slew tens of millions of people, maternal mortality was reported in one study to be as high as 27 percent, while in the 1957-8 “Asian” flu pandemic, which may have killed two million, half of the women of child-bearing age who died were pregnant.

“Despite evidence of an increase in maternal mortality after infection with H1N1, in the later phases of the pandemic its effect on pregnant women has been less than was initially anticipated,” said Lapinsky.

This could be explained by vaccination advice and early use of antiviral drugs to women with flu symptoms of flu, he suggested.

H1N1 caused at least 16,713 deaths as of March 7, according to a March 12 posting on the World Health Organisation website (www.who.int).

Bus Rapid Transit System In Ahmedabad Could Well Be The Next Terror Target

Bus Rapid Transit System In Ahmedabad Could Well Be The Next Terror TargetAHMEDABAD INDIA: The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Ahmedabad could well be the next terror target. It almost came in the crosshairs of terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, based in Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

Officials of Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) have found this explosive information in the cellphone conversation and email intercepts of Bashir Ahmad Baba, 32, a resident of Kashmir and an HM who was arrested by ATS on March 13 from Anand. “Before Bashir was arrested by ATS, his mobile phone was already under surveillance owing to the huge number of calls he made to Kashmir and PoK,” said ATS officials.

The calls intercepted thus revealed a sinister plan to blow up the BRTS bus at Shivranjani. Sources in the ATS said Bashir used Dr Anand Shah’s mobile phone to make several calls to top terrorist of HM, Bilal Shera, in PoK. Shah, a medical practitioner, allowed Bashir to stay at his flat in Parishram apartment near Shivranjani fly over.

Bashir had come to Ahmedabad in the guise of a Kashmir-based representative of Kimaya Foundation — an NGO with nine centres across India — which helps children suffering from cleft lip. “Bashir and Bilal in one of their conversations spoke about terror attacks in Gujarat. Ahmedabad figured in the first phase of terror plans. Bilal asked about a target that would create a scare and Bashir told him about the BRTS bus stop at Shivranjani,” said sources.

Bashir apparently recced the BRTS bus stop area a couple of times. Later, in an email — a copy of which is now with the ATS sleuths — he wrote to Bilal that the BRTS is a prestigious project for the state government and it is also very slack on security arrangements. He also pointed out that Shivranjani bus stop has a footwear market which draws huge crowds.
