People ‘Fleeing For Lives’ in Australian Fires

6c09e34aa2fires People ‘Fleeing For Lives’ in Australian FiresSYDNEY : People ‘Fleeing For Lives’ in Australian Fires, Residents were ‘fleeing for their lives’ on Wednesday as wildfires burned out of control in South Australia, a witness said, as the state endured catastrophic fire conditions.

Less than a year after 173 people lost their lives in the Black Saturday fires in neighbouring Victoria state, a large fire burning outside Port Lincoln had already destroyed two buildings, officials said.

One resident, named Ray, told ABC radio he expected his house to be gone as when he was fleeing his house there were “flames above the roof.”

He added: “I’d just like to say to people who are out there on the roads and blocking the roads, people like me are fleeing for our lives.”

The Country Fire Service said the fire was about two kilometres (1.24 miles) outside of Port Lincoln and extremely dangerous.

It warned people in the area to take shelter in a solid structure immediately and to stay off the roads.

“You should not attempt to leave or enter this area as the roads will not be safe,” it said in a warning.

Another Port Lincoln resident, identified only as Jeff, told the ABC he could see “exploding big flames” streaming from the fire, adding that “some of them look to be at least 100-foot high.”

Firefighters are also battling another dangerous fire near the South Australian town of Kingston in the state’s southeast, as temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) in the largely desert state.

Meanwhile residents began cleaning up the small communities in Western Australia’s Pilbara region on Wednesday after tropical Cyclone Laurence swept through, flattening buildings and uprooting trees.

The cyclone was sweeping eastward across the state but had been downgraded to a Category 1 storm — the lowest rating — and was expected to weaken further as it heads inland, officials said.

American Airlines Crash in Jamaica Update

1781af9d35update American Airlines Crash in Jamaica UpdateKINGSTON : American Airlines Crash in Jamaica Update, The American Airlines crash landing at Kingston’s international airport injured 91 people, the country’s Information Minister Daryl Vaz said Wednesday.

None of the injuries were deemed critical and Vaz said most had been released from hospital.

“The majority of injuries are broken bones and of course cuts and bruises and badly shaken up,” Vaz said in the report on CNN’s website.

American Airlines Flight 331, carrying 148 passengers and six crew members, overshot the runway late Tuesday at Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport as it landed in heavy rain.

One of the jet’s engines broke off, part of its landing gear fell apart and the aircraft body was cracked in the accident, officials said.

The airport was immediately closed and all other flights were diverted to Montego Bay, on the western end of the island.

Indian President Creates History, Flies Sukhoi

Indian President Creates History, Flies SukhoiNEW DELHI: Indian President Pratibha Patil did today what no woman before her has ever done – fly in a Sukhoi-30MKI, an Indian Air Force fighter jet. The Sukhoi took off from the Lohegaon Air Force base near Pune and will do a sortie of 30-minute.
The air force base is all decked up for the sortie on Wednesday morning, IAF Wing Commander T.K. Singha told. Upon her arrival around 9 am, Patil, the supreme commander of the armed forces, was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour by the air-warriors. She will then have breakfast since she cannot fly on an empty stomach.
The president, who is 74 years old, will then change into a special G-Suit (anti-gravity suit), which helps the flier withstand high gravitational pressure by preventing excessive blood from flowing to the brain.
To make the experience a memorable one for President Patil, two more Sukhois will fly beside her aircraft to enable her to gain an experience of how fighter jets look in flight at that altitude and at such high speeds.

PM Gilani Formally Hands Over JF-17 to PAF

PM Gilani Formally Hands Over JF-17 to PAFISLAMABAD, Pakistan News: PM Gilani Formally Hands Over JF-17 to PAF, First JF-17 Thunder aircraft has been handed over to Pakistan Air Force.. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani says JF-17 Thunder is an important achievement towards self-sufficiency.
Air Chief Marshal says that 40 aircrafts will be built in Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. Talking to media after a ceremony of handing over JF-17 Thunder to Pakistan Air Force, the Prime Minister said that all the governments prolonged their tenures in the name of accountability since 1988
The PM maintained that media personnel talked about 34 politician beneficiaries of the NRO and ignored others in the list. “General Musharraf used these cases to prolong his tenure,” the PM told. Addressing the ceremony, Gilani mentioned PAF’s role in recent war against militancy. JF-17 Thunder is an important achievement towards self-sufficiency, he added.

The JF-17 Thunder a new generation, light-weight, all weather, day/night multi-role fighter aircraft with glass cockpit, hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controls and efficient man-machine interface will ensure a minimal pilot workload. The maximum speed of Mach 1.6 and a high thrust-to-weight ratio will enable it to perform well in an air defence role. An ability to carry short – as well as long-range air-to-air missiles, lends the aircraft a first shot capability of conventional as well as non-conventional arsenal.
In the surface attack role, a variety of weapons – conventional as well as precision-guided, a sophisticated avionics suite along with accurate weapon delivery system, ensure higher mission success rate. An effective ECM suite will greatly enhance survivability of the platform. Its anticipated air-to-air refueling capability will provide the JF-17 with more loiter time to safeguard the frontiers and the ability to deliver the required punch at distance. It will replace the ageing fleets of A-5s, F-7Ps and the Mirages in the PAF inventory thus fulfilling a multi-role task. In addition to that the PAC would also be able to export its surplus production in the days to come as the aircraft has received acclaims from the user like PAF.

Bangkok Airways jet skidded

Bangkok Airways jet skidded, BANGKOK: A pilot was killed and seven passengers hospitalised Tuesday when a Bangkok Airways jet skidded and hit an old control tower as it landed on Thailand’s resort island of Ko Samui, the airline said.

Thailand’s public health ministry said 42 people were injured in the crash.

Among the injured, Bangkok Airways’ president said four passengers — one Italian, two British and one Swiss — were seriously injured.

“The flight landed on the south runway and skidded off on the left side before it hit an abandoned air control tower. The aircraft was damaged,” Puttipong Prasattong Osot told reporters.

“The captain was killed and the co-pilot was evacuated from the aircraft and is now hospitalised,” he said.

Another six passengers had also been taken to hospital, with broken legs among the injuries, but everyone on board had been safely evacuated, he said.

“There are four passengers seriously wounded, one Italian, two British, one Swiss,” he added.

Puttipong named the pilot as Captain Chatchai Pansuwan and said he had worked with Bangkok Airways for 19 years, and had flown that model of aircraft for the past 14 years.

Aviation officials were en route to Samui airport to investigate the cause of the incident, he said.

There were 68 passengers aboard the 70-seater ATR-72, Puttipong said, which was flying from the southwestern tourist town Krabi, on the Andaman coast, to Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand.
