JAKARTA: The Indonesian rescue teams continued to search Saturday, as hopes faded of dozens of people missing after a 7.0 magnitude importantly, an official said.
The quake, which struck Java’s southern coast on Wednesday, triggered a landslide that buried dozens of people in the village Cikangkareng, 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Jakarta.
“The earthquake has killed at least 65 people. The search for dozens of victims continues even though their chances of survival are slim,” Disaster Management Agency spokesman said Priyadi Kardon.
“Sometimes, heavy machinery is not enough to help rescue workers carefully lift the bodies,” he said.
The earthquake, which affected over 31,000 homes across the densely populated island of Java, also felt in nearby Bali and Sumatra.
Kardon said around 27,000 people had been evacuated.
Many victims have complained about the slow arrival of enough tents, food and medical supplies following the disaster.
Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge.
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake triggered a tsunami off South Java, in 2006, killing 596 people and displacing around 74,000.
A massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra island in 2004 triggered a catastrophic tsunami that killed over 200,000 people around Asia, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
