As he sets off across the harsh terrain of desert India, he discovers he’s not merely transporting a battered vehicle but an old touring cinema.

Along the way, Vishnu reluctantly picks up a young runaway (Mohammed Faizal Usmani), a wandering old entertainer (Satish Kaushik) and a striking gypsy woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee). Together they roam in the barren land, searching for water and an elusive fair. The journey turns dire when they are waylaid by corrupt cops and a notorious water lord.

The key to their freedom is the eccentric collection of films and the two forty-year-old film projectors in the back of the truck. As in ‘1001 Nights’, if the films are good, they live and move on. If the films are boring, they face death in the outback. The journey proves transformative for each of the travelers, but especially for Vishnu who discovers life, love and laughter on the Indian highway.

Tom Hanks on Regis And Kelly

Tom Hanks on Regis And Kelly, Tom Hanks promptly apologized for his slip-up on live TV. When the conversation turned to Sunday’s Oscars, Ripa said, “Oh well, I guess you didn’t win last year.”09c77abae1kelly Tom Hanks on Regis And Kelly

Actor Tom Hanks was on Regis and Kelly show today and guess what. Tom Hanks mistook host Kelly Ripa as Kathie Lee. Nothing serious happened though. Everything went fine as movie star quickly apologized.

How many mistakes can you count in Tom Hanks’ appearance on Regis & Kelly? We’ve got Tom calling Kelly “Kathie Lee,” Regis not knowing what “engaged” means, and Tom missing a trivia question even though the answer is “Tom Hanks.

This must have infuriated her no end as any comparison with Kathie Lee for her is unimaginable.

Thirty nine year old Kelly Maria Ripa took the comment in her stride and when he apologized, she simply but jokingly said that he had to apologize for the blunder he had made.

Kelly Ripa has hosted the show on which Tom made the comments for the last nine years and she is loved by all for her presenting sills.

Asian vets to Take on Hollywood Greats at Berlin Film Fest

BERLIN : Asian vets to Take on Hollywood Greats at Berlin Film Fest, Asian movies will take pride of place this week at the 60th Berlin Film Festival, one of world cinema’s top showcases, as new pictures by Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese make their red-carpet premieres.
d5ae617c15m fest Asian vets to Take on Hollywood Greats at Berlin Film Fest
Hollywood stars will rub shoulders with Asian legends in the snowy German capital for the anniversary edition of the 11-day Berlinale, which will kick off Thursday with “Apart Together” by Wang Quan’an of China.

German director Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man”) will lead a seven-member jury including Oscar-winning actress Renee Zellweger, which will choose among 20 nominees for the coveted Golden and Silver Bear top prizes on February 20.

“Apart Together” is a period drama about a soldier forced to flee Mao’s forces for Taiwan in 1949 who reunites decades later with the love of his life.

Japanese master Yoji Yamada, the maker of more than 80 films in his four-decade-long career, will bring down the curtain on the event with an out-of-competition screening of his latest picture, “About Her Brother”.

“Nearly half the main showcase films are family films, although most of those families are fairly dysfunctional,” Berlinale chief Dieter Kosslick quipped.

Chinese veteran Zhang Yimou (“Hero”) will present “A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop” while Koji Wakamatsu of Japan will unveil “Caterpillar”. And Bollywood heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan is due in town with “My Name is Khan”.

The 67-year-old Scorsese’s thriller “Shutter Island” starring Leonardo DiCaprio will get its world premiere in Berlin but screen out of competition.

Meanwhile all eyes will be on Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer”, which he completed while under house arrest at his Swiss chalet awaiting possible extradition on US charges dating from the 1970s over his admission of having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

The movie is based on the bestseller “The Ghost” and sees Ewan McGregor discovering skeletons in the closet of a former British prime minister modelled on Tony Blair (Pierce Brosnan).

While the French-Polish director, 76, will be absent, his stars are expected at the gala premiere in the 1,600-seat Berlinale Palast theatre.

German director Oskar Roehler has generated pre-festival buzz for “Jew Suss” about the making of the notorious Nazi-era anti-Semitic film of the same name.

“In it, you can see the kind of moral conflicts in which artists, in this case actors, can find themselves,” Kosslick said.

Provocative British director Michael Winterbottom, a favourite on the festival circuit, will screen “The Killer Inside Me” with Jessica Alba, Casey Affleck and Kate Hudson in the story of a Texas sheriff’s dark secret.

And reclusive British graffiti artist Banksy, who has kept his identity a mystery, is due to make a low-profile visit for a documentary about his work, “Exit Through the Gift Shop”.

Also keenly awaited is a screening for the masses at the Brandenburg Gate of a restored version of the 1927 groundbreaking German classic “Metropolis” — complete with lost footage unearthed in Argentina two years ago.

The Berlinale, which ranks second only to Cannes among European film festivals, has a history of opening doors for smaller pictures.

Last year’s laureate, “The Milk of Sorrow” by Peru’s Claudia Llosa, is now nominated for the best foreign-language film Oscar and has had a respectable run in international art-house theatres.

“You have to compliment the Berlinale for discovering at an early stage what is cutting-edge in cinema and for having a sense what will move audiences,” Jan Schulz-Ojala, chief critic of Berlin’s daily Der Tagesspiegel.

But he was concerned that in an anniversary year, the biggest names were directors in their twilight years such as Scorsese, Polanski and Yamada.

“It worries me to see that because I think it may then be harder to draw the best mid-career directors, who may just go to Cannes in the future,” he said.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

5a45d8e595essage Happy new year greeting messageRevellers across the globe began ringing in the New Year but Bali terror warning and a deadly shooting in Finland stoked security jitters, already high after a failed US bomb plot.( New Year SMS )

Police were on alert in many world cities after the thwarted Christmas Day attack on a US-bound plane, as party-goers from Vanuatu to Vancouver began raising glasses to 2010 and closing the door on a decade scarred by wars, terror attacks, natural disasters and financial turmoil.

The party spirit was alive and well in Sydney, where a vast display of fireworks burst into the night sky at midnight.

The US embassy in Indonesia said it had received a warning of a possible attack on the resort island of Bali, the scene of multiple bombings targeting Westerners, but local authorities denied any knowledge of such an alert.

In Australia, an estimated 1.5 million people crowded the harbour foreshore for the high-tech fireworks display on the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Paris’s Eiffel Tower was to be transformed into a multicoloured light show while in Berlin, more than one million revellers were expected on the boulevard leading to the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German unity.

Celebrations in Britain centre on the London Eye, the giant wheel across the river Thames from the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, the world’s most famous clock.

A downpour of confetti was to mark midnight at New York’s traditional mass celebration in Times Square in the heart of Manhattan, amid security jitters rekindled by the bomb plot against a Detroit-bound passenger jet claimed by al Qaeda, undercover police, surveillance cameras, uniformed teams and radiation and biological detection equipment were to monitor the crowds.

“It will be a full fledged deployment of resources,” city police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. “We assume here that New York is the number one terrorist target in America.”

Around half a million revellers were expected to crowd Hong Kong’s harbour front to watch 9,000 fireworks.

But in Thailand, police banned fireworks after a New Year’s Eve blaze at a Bangkok nightclub a year ago killed 65 revellers.

Angela Merkel Looks Confident After Victory

Angela Merkel Looks Confident After VictoryBERLIN: Fresh from an election victory, Angela Merkel got set for a new term as German chancellor on Monday, facing a stack of challenges topped by an ailing economy and an unpopular Afghanistan mission.

“I think we’ve really earned the right to celebrate tonight,” a beaming Merkel, Germany’s first female leader and the only chancellor from the former communist east, told jubilant supporters in Berlin late on Sunday.

“But I want to say to everyone in this country that I want to be the chancellor of all Germans, so that things improve for our country … We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Europe’s biggest economy has been hit harder than most by the global recession, slamming demand for its all-important exports and sending the country into its steepest recession since World War II.

Unemployment, identified by Merkel as her “top priority” to tackle, stands at 8.3 percent but is forecast to shoot higher in the coming months, while fighting the slump has blown a massive hole in Germany’s public finances.

This time around, Forbes magazine’s most powerful woman on Earth will be in a different coalition, something she believes will help her implement the reforms that she says are vital for lifting the economy out of its malaise.

For the past four years, her conservative CDU/CSU bloc has been stuck in a loveless grand coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD). But now Merkel is set to govern with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).

“Our main objective has been achieved, namely a change of government, which for me is what really counts this evening,” Merkel, 55, said on public television on Sunday.

Although the wildly popular Merkel savoured her victory, the daily Tagesspiegel said her around 33-percent score, the right’s worst since 1949, marked a “black eye” for the chancellor.

FDP leader Guido Westerwelle, whose party’s strong 14.5-percent showing put Merkel over the top, aims to the country’s first openly gay foreign minister.

The SPD crashed to about 23 percent, its worst result since World War II and will be condemned to the opposition benches after 11 years in government — four with Merkel and seven in a coalition with the Greens under ex-chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

The FDP, meanwhile, returns to government after 11 years watching proceedings from the sidelines, hoping to get the CDU to cut taxes and to reverse Schroeder’s decision to abandon nuclear power by 2020.

Even assuming the new partners see eye-to-eye on all issues — anything but a foregone conclusion — Merkel’s new centre-right cabinet will have its work cut out, however, even without Germany’s economic woes.

The head of European economics Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Holger Schmieding, said the dawn of a new-look cabinet was “not a revolution”.

“There will be no dramatic changes but there will be some tax reforms over the next four years, and there will probably be some move towards deregulation modestly in the labour market and probably some changes in the health-care system,” he told AFP.

The Financial Times Deutschland agreed: “Anyone who expected or feared the chancellor will make a radical change of course with her new government is mistaken.”

Germany is saddled with health care, education and social security systems all in dire need of reform, its population is ageing rapidly and Merkel faces an uphill task to meet the country’s goals on emissions cuts.

Poverty rates and unemployment in the former communist East Germany, where Merkel grew up, are much higher than in the west, 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Abroad, Germany’s mission in Afghanistan is highly unpopular and could become a major domestic headache for Merkel in the coming years if an insurgency in the north where its 4,200 troops are based continues to escalate.

The presence of German soldiers in Afghanistan has also been followed by a string of threats by extremists, including from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and German-born Muslims.
