Chile Quake 2010 Tsunami

Chile —  Chile Quake 2010 Tsunami latest news updates :- Security forces said Monday they arrested dozens of people for violating curfew after looters sacked virtually every market in this hard-hit city and Chile’s earthquake toll surpassed 700. President Michelle Bachelet promised imminent deliveries of food, water and shelter for thousands living on the streets.

“We are confronting an emergency without parallel in Chile’s history,” Bachelet declared Sunday, a day after the magnitude-8.8 quake – one of the biggest in centuries – killed at least 708 people and destroyed or badly damaged 500,000 homes. Bachelet said “a growing number” of people were recorded as missing.

The governor of the Concepcion region, Jaime Toha, said troops and police arrested 55 people overnight for violating a curfew imposed to halt looting.

Zardari Biggest Threat to Democracy: Nawaz Sharif

Zardari Biggest Threat to Democracy: Nawaz Sharif, PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif has said that Zardari is the biggest threat to democracy.
ea9ace9c3bharif1 Zardari Biggest Threat to Democracy: Nawaz SharifDuring a press briefing after holding a consultative party meeting, Nawaz expressed dismay over the government’s decision regarding judges’ appointment and maintained that there was no difference between autocracy and the democracy being practiced by Zardari. He expressed the fear that such moves on part of government may disillusion the people with democracy. Nawaz said that though he was the biggest sympathizer of Zardari, but deplored that he has always been betrayed by the president, and added that the PM did not take him into confidence vis-à-vis the decision on judges.
Condemning the unilateral decision on part of government as regards the judges’ appointment, he said that it seemed as if those at the helm of affairs have not accepted the restoration of judiciary in wake of the lawyers’ movement. He said that for PML-N confrontational politics was against the democratic process. Nawaz alleged that the incumbent government was targeting the judiciary to protect its corruption from Supreme Court’s ruling on NRO.
He grieved on the non-compliance of court orders, saying that it was a blatant disrespect of free judiciary, which was also against the public sentiments. He noted that the move was of the same kind as of November 3, 2007 decision by a dictator. He called upon the government to avoid clash between the institutions and ensure implementation of constitution and court’s orders. He said that public issues were being ignored, adding that the rulers were playing with the institutions’ sanctity.
He said that to boost one’s power at the cost of the country was condemnable, adding that the public got the free judiciary restored and as such its decision be respected. He asserted that his party would not allow the government to backtrack on Charter of Democracy, institutional respect and the legal and constitutional appointments of the judges. “The government would not be given freedom to commit corruption and distortion of the constitution”, Nawaz said, adding that he with the support of public would keep a vigilant eye on the government not only in the parliament but also outside it against such acts. He said he would do his level best to protect the public to bear the burnt of the misdeeds of the rulers, and added that there was no room for adventurism in the country. He said it was high time for him to play a role for democracy, and warned against disregard of the institutions by an individual for vested interests.

“Dear John” Tops “Avatar” at Box Office

LOS ANGELES: It had to happen sometime, but nobody expected the biggest film of all time to lose its North American box office crown this weekend to “Dear John,” a low-budget “chick flick” with a pair of little-known stars.c9156a5fbfr john “Dear John” Tops “Avatar” at Box Office

The romantic drama opened at No. 1 with three-day sales of $32.4 million across the United States and Canada, crushing both industry forecasts and reigning champ “Avatar,” according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi spectacular slipped to No. 2 with $23.6 million in its eighth weekend. But “Avatar” remained the top pick overseas, earning $76 million. Its worldwide tally rose to $2.21 billion, divided between $630.1 million from North America and $1.58 billion from foreign markets.

“Avatar” last Tuesday surpassed the $601 million haul of Cameron’s 1997 release “Titanic” to become the biggest movie of all time in North America. It had already taken the international and worldwide titles from “Titanic” thanks to ticket-price inflation and the higher cost of 3D screenings.

Pundits had forecast the 20th Century Fox release would lose its North American crown next weekend to “Valentine’s Day,” which will take advantage of both the eponymous holiday and the U.S. Presidents Day weekend.

But few predicted that “Dear John” would cause a stampede to movie theaters by young women. Moreover, the hardy demographic appeared to ignore the blizzard that shut down a large swathe of the mid-Atlantic region.

“When they come out, young women come out in droves,” said Geoffrey Ammer, president of worldwide marketing at the film’s closely held financier Relativity Media.

He said the first wave of moviegoers texted and Tweeted their friends during the screenings to deliver their favourable verdicts, triggering further waves.

Haiti Earthquake news

ef1774ec2550x152 Haiti Earthquake newsSANTIAGO: Haiti Earthquake news, Rescuers dug out 23 survivors from the rubble of the biggest hotel in Haiti’s capital, which collapsed in this week’s quake, the head of a Chilean team at the site said Friday.

“Chilean specialists arrived overnight with search dogs and worked with teams from other countries, and 23 survivors emerged” from the Hotel Montana, Juan Gabriel Valdes, a former head of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti, told Santiago’s Radio Cooperativa.

The Montana Hotel, located in the hills overlooking the capital Port-au-Prince, was used by many foreign aid staff and tourists.

French and US rescue teams on Thursday had already saved a dozen people from its shattered remains.

“Some sectors of the hotel have caved in more than others, but there were these developments overnight, and without any doubt they were pretty extraordinary,” Valdes said.

Body Bug Biggest Loser

2a0dead69eloser Body Bug Biggest LoserBody Bug Biggest Loser: Last night I’m watching the first episode of season seven of The Biggest Loser and Bob starts talking about the body bug. Well it’s actually bodybugg and it comes from a company called Apex fitness (which is a division of 24 hour fitness which is featured all over the show – what a coincidence). When I saw it I thought, “Hey that’s a GoWear arm bands.” I almost wondered if they are the same product with a different name. Then in an article in Business Week Online (march 2005) you see where the system is created by the Body Media company, and distributed through Apex (so they are basically the same – I think).

What the bodybugg does is it has multiple sensors to accurately determine how many calories you burn in a day. BodyBugg measures heat flux – or the temperature the body’s emitting – then it measures water temperature to compare to the user’s body temperature. When you’re working up a sweat, BodyBugg measures galvanic skin response, or the way the pores open up to sweat. Finally, it has a two-axis accelerometer that measures movement. So if you burn 1500 calories a day, but you are still Gaining weight you either need to eat less than 1500 calories a day, or exercise more.

It does work as a pedometer, so you can track your distance. It does not function as a heart rate monitor (so if you are exercising you have not idea if you are in the aerobic zone or not). The kicker is the price. You’re going to spend $ 200 for the arm band and the display at amazon.com (when they are in stock). You will pay $ 348 for the arm band, the display and a 6 month subscription to the site at Apex. Subscription? Yep, you connect it to your computer login to a website to chart your progress. Apex with charging $ 14.95 a month (if you buy more months it’s less expensive), and GoWear charging $ 9.95 a month.

While these units can be worn 24 / 7, why not just get a decent heart rate monitor and log your food and fitness in a fitness software package and skip the monthly fee?
