Yemen Dynamite Blast kills 19

SANAA: A blast in a suspected dynamite storage depot in the basement of a residential building in Yemen killed up to 19 people as they slept on Tuesday, and reduced their building to rubble.b770a7924dlls 19 Yemen Dynamite Blast kills 19

“We think it was dynamite,” a local official in the southern city of Taiz where the blast took place told Reuters. Al Jazeera had earlier reported the blast took place in a fireworks warehouse.

The official said the pre-dawn explosion caused the collapse of a three-storey building with six residential apartments, and partly destroyed two adjacent homes. At least nine bodies were pulled from the rubble and rescue workers were looking for 10 more believed buried.

Some 15 people also were injured in the blast but survived.

The official said the dynamite was believed to have belonged to a Yemeni businessman and contractor who used explosives in roadbuilding works to flatten hills, but who did not live in the building.

An investigation into the cause of the blast was continuing, but based on initial findings there was no indication it was anything other than an accident, the official said.

Yemen rose to the forefront of Western security concerns after the Yemeni arm of al Qaeda claimed responsibility for a failed attempt to bomb a U.S.-bound plane in December.

Western governments and neighbouring Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, fear Yemen could become a failed state in which al Qaeda could exploit instability to recruit and train militants to launch attacks in the region and beyond.

In addition to fighting al Qaeda, Yemen is also trying to bring an end to a northern Shi’ite rebellion while also facing simmering separatist sentiment in the south, where tensions have escalated in recent weeks.

Barack Obama Calls Indian PM,Manmohan Singh Condemns Cafe Blast

Barack Obama Calls Indian PM,Manmohan Singh Condemns Cafe BlastNEW DELHI INDIA: President Barack Obama has called India’s prime minister to express regret over the loss of lives in the weekend bombing of a cafe in western India that killed 11 people.

A government press release says Obama phoned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh early Thursday and condemned the attack.

Authorities say another victim died Wednesday, raising the death toll to 11.

No one has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s bombing in Pune, southeast of India’s financial hub Mumbai. Suspicions, however, quickly fell on Pakistan-linked militant groups blamed for past attacks, including the 2008 massacre of 166 people in Mumbai.

Investigators say the bomb contained RDX explosives, ammonium nitrate and petroleum hydrocarbon oil.

foreigners in Pune, asking them to maintain a “heightened situational awareness and a low profile”.

“American citizens are advised to be alert to the continued possibility of terrorist attacks in India.

“The February 13 terrorist bombing in a bakery frequented by Westerners in Pune, Maharashtra, serves as a reminder that terrorists and their sympathisers are capable of attacking targets where US citizens or Westerners are known to congregate or visit,” the US travel alert said.

In its travel alert, updated after the blast, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the UK government said, “On 13 February a bomb exploded in a bakery/coffee shop in Pune killing nine and injuring up to 53 people. Foreigners were among the casualties. British nationals are reminded to remain vigilant in public places.”

“There is a high general threat from terrorism throughout India. Recent attacks have targeted public places including those frequented by westerners and expatriates,” it said.

Australia, in its alert said,”we advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in India at this time because of the high risk of terrorist activity by militant groups…We continue to receive reporting of possible threats against prominent business and tourist locations, including in Mumbai and New Delhi.”

In the first major attack after 26/11, terror struck Pune on Saturday night as a powerful bomb ripped apart at a popular bakery-cum-cafe near the Chabad House, killing nine people and injuring 57 others.
