Today Is World Kidney Day

Today Is World Kidney DayKARACHI PAKISTAN : World Kidney Day (WKD) 2010 is being observed on Thursday with the theme ‘Protect Your Kidney, Control Diabetes’.

The day holds particular relevance for Pakistan where one in three citizens over 40 has some form of Kidney disease.

According to available studies diabetes and high blood pressure are the two most common causes of chronic kidney disease and, if left unchecked, patients may ultimately need to undergo dialysis up to three times a week to stay alive.

“The scenario demands widespread screening of those sections of society that are at risk of kidney disease,” said Dr. Fatima Jawad.

Talking to APP on Wednesday she said it is essential to create awareness amongst physicians as well as the public about the factors causing kidney diseases and its ultimate failure.

Studies have shown that early detection and treatment can delay and possibly prevent kidney failure in most patients, said Dr. Ahmer Raza.

Diabetes, the doctors said has emerged to be a global epidemic which currently affects an estimated 171 million people worldwide and is estimated to affect over 246 million people living with diabetes.

Surge in the disease was attributed to population growth, aging, urbanization, and the increasing prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity.

Diabetes, a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life, is registered in almost all age groups of people in Pakistan.

The diseases is categorized into two different types – type 1 diabetes results from the body’s failure to produce insulin, the hormone that “unlocks” the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them.

Type One Diabetes is usually a congenital condition found among children and Insulin is required to treat type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), combined with relative insulin deficiency. Most patients with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Experts agreed that Type Two diabetes can be prevented and, to a certain extent, controlled through lifestyle interventions such as increased physical activity, weight loss (in patients who are overweight) and proper nutrition.

When lifestyle interventions are insufficient to control diabetes, anti-diabetic medications and insulin may be required, said Dr. Fatima Jawad.

The diabetologist and the nephrologist answering a question to control the situation also recommended strict control of blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

“Use of certain classes of blood pressure medicines can also be a risk,” said Dr. Jawad and urged for medication under proper supervision.

She also suggested need to avoid drugs that may cause further kidney damage (especially some pain killers), a low salt diet and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Fosamax and femur fractures

Fosamax: Is Long Term Use of Bone Strengthening Drug Linked to Fractures?

Fosamax, one in a class of drugs called bisphosphonates, is supposed to make bones stronger. But now there’s mounting evidence that for some women, taking Fosamax or its generic alendronate for more than five years could cause spontaneous fractures.

“We are seeing people just walking, walking down the steps, patients who are doing low-energy exercise,” said Dr. Kenneth Egol, professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. “Very unusual, the femur is one of the strongest bones in the body.” Source

Chelsea King Body Found

Chelsea King Body Found, Authorities say they believe a body found in a grave is a San Diego County teen who formerly lived outside Chicago and who went missing last week.2e13936220found Chelsea King Body Found

Sheriff William Gore said the body was located Tuesday afternoon in a shallow grave near Lake Hodges. Gore said it is believed to be that of 17-year-old Chelsea King, who disappeared Thursday.

King’s parents, Brent and Kelly King, have been informed, Gore said, adding that they’re “devastated.”

The likelihood that the body was King’s led thousands to gather for a somber candlelight vigil in her memory.

Back in Naperville, where the Kings lived for 10 years before returning to their native California, Rich Nowell and his family were in complete shock and saddened by Tuesday’s developments

“We’re all numb at the present time and it’s just a tragedy that somebody so kind, so sweet, so generous — that this could happen to somebody like her, and we’re all quite upset,” said Nowell.

Up until just a few hours ago, the family had held onto hope that Chelsea would be found alive.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Nowell is taking the news especially hard.  He said Chelsea was a mentor to him.

“She was just an amazing person.  I felt like she was my sister,” he said as the rest of the Nowell family sobbed in the kitchen.  “She taught me a lot of things.”

Chelsea was last seen Thursday, Feb. 25. before heading out to run after school. Her car was found at the Rancho Bernardo Glassman Community Park. Her cell phone, iPod and school clothes were found inside the car.

Since then, hundreds of volunteers searched the area near Lake Hodges. On Monday, law enforcement sources said an article of King’s clothing was found on the southern edge of the lake.

DNA on the clothing led to the arrest of John Albert Gardner III, according to investigators.  Gardner, a registered sex offender, was uncooperative with authorities and was being held without bail on suspicion of first-degree murder and rape.

He’d been previously linked to an attack on a jogger in December, according to investigators. The woman in that case got away and identified Gardner in a photo lineup.

Indian `Rubber Man`

Indian `Rubber Man`NEW DELHI  INDIA: Vijay Sharma can wrap his legs over his head, wriggle through a tennis racket and wind his arms around his back.

His flexibility has earned him the title of ‘Rubber Man’ in the Limca book of Records, India’s version of the Guinness book of World Records, and he hopes to one-day achieve global fame.

‘It was when I was training for martial arts I realised my body was so bendable I might be capable of setting a world record in flexibility,’ the 27-year-old said.

This s became a source of motivation for me.’ Shop assistant Vijay claims his bendy obsession stems from watching Jackie Chan movies when he was a youngster.

The village boy from Rajashtan’s Jhunjhunu district started taking martial arts lessons in 1999 in a bid to learn Chan’s acrobatic fighting style.

It was during these lessons he discovered the extent of his flexibility and started experimenting.

He squeezed into tiny spaces, curled his body into boxes and attempted to drink from bottles held between his toes.

After seeing the tennis racket stunt in Guinness book of world records, he became curious and bought a tennis racket the next day. He quickly removed the strings and tried to pass through the nine-and-a-half-inch surface.

‘I tried to get through it, but got stuck for the entire night,’ he said. ‘I had to shut myself in my room and sleep with it. I got up at 3 o clock and tried to get out of it.

‘I began to bleed but that didn’t stop me.’ Vijay, who practices up to four hours a day to improve his elasticity, has performed on TV Shows and various tournaments at national level. But he believes, he has performed the toughest stunt on a Zee TV show.

‘I added a kick to my stunt, that is I pulled my leg up all the way so it was perpendicular to the floor and pushed my torso along with my leg out of the racket,’ he explained.

‘It was such a stunt that I couldn’t breathe for a moment while doing it.’ He has won a silver medal in body flexibility at a country level tournament, held at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh in 2001. He also claims to have broken the world record for wrist-egg-crushing – which involves pushing your hand backwards to lie flat against the arm – set by a Lissa Patterson (CORR) in 2005.

‘I made the claim and even got some documents from Guinness Book of World Records to complete, but I couldn’t get back because of constraints of time and money,’ he said.

Least interested in his father’s clothes shop business, Vijay wants to achieve fame by working on martial arts and body flexibility.

‘Anything for fame,’ he said.

Natalie Holloway Confession

LONDON – The suspect in the disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway has confessed to disposing of her body in a swamp on the Caribbean island of Aruba, according to a Dutch tabloid newspaper and Aruba’s chief prosecutor.
Natalie Holloway Confession
Joran van der Sloot made the statement in a sit-down interview with a television journalist, De Telegraaf reported Tuesday.

However, Aruba’s chief prosecutor Peter Blanken told NBC News that the suspect’s story was “very unbelievable.”
Holloway, from Mountain Brook, Ala., was 18 when she was last seen leaving a bar in the Aruban capital on the final night of a high school graduation trip in May 2005. Her body has never been recovered.

Authorities in Aruba reopened the investigation after they found out about the alleged confession, which is believed to have been recorded in August.

“The locations, names and times he gave just did not make sense,” Blanken told NBC News.

‘Lies’
De Telegraaf quoted Blanken as saying that van der Sloot’s statement was “held together by lies and fantasy.”

The interview was not aired by German broadcaster RTL because of doubts about whether van der Sloot was telling the truth, Blanken added.

Van der Sloot claimed that Holloway had died accidentally and insisted that he did not kill her, Blanken said.

In 2008, the suspect was secretly taped saying that Holloway had died after suffering a seizure on a beach and that he had dumped her body in the sea.

Van der Sloot later said he had been lying in a bid to impress the man he was talking to.

He also told a U.S. journalist that he sold Holloway to a man on a boat for $10,000. However, he subsequently insisted he had also made up that story.

Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005. She was last seen getting into a car with van der Sloot and two of his friends.

The three men have been questioned repeatedly by police but have never been formally charged.

Adrienne Shelly

4addbbbfbdshelly Adrienne ShellyAdrienne Shelly (June 24, 1966 – November 1, 2006), sometimes credited as Adrienne Shelley, was an American actress, director and screenwriter. Making her name in independent films such as 1989’s The Unbelievable Truth and 1990’s Trust, Shelly transitioned to a writing and directing career in subsequent years. She wrote, co-starred in, and directed the 2007 film Waitress, which won five awards, including the Jury Prize at the Sarasota Film Festival for narrative feature, and the Audience and Feature Film awards at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

Shortly before Waitress was picked up by the Sundance Film Festival, Shelly was murdered by 19 year old construction worker Diego Pillco, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador. Pillco’s initial story was that Shelly had argued with him about construction noise and he struck her in the face, knocking her unconscious. Pillco believed the blow was fatal and panicked about being caught, so staged her body to look as though she had committed suicide. Shelly’s husband found her body hanging from the shower curtain rod. Police initially suspected suicide but an unexplained footprint at the crime scene led them to investigate further. Shelly’s family insisted that it could not have been a suicide, stating that she was a devoted mother to her three year old daughter Sophie and would never have left her.

Pillco was arrested and sentenced to 25 years in prison; after serving his time he will be deported.

Following her death, Shelly’s husband started a foundation in his wife’s name which awards various grants and scholarships, and gives an annual award for films that oppose violence against women.

Avandia

Avandia, DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Rosiglitazone is an oral drug 195d6c187fvandia Avandiathat reduces the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. It is used for treating patients with type 2 diabetes and is in a class of anti-diabetic drugs called thiazolidinediones. The other member of this class is pioglitazone (Actos). Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is important for controlling the levels of glucose in the blood. Insulin stimulates the cells of the body to remove glucose from the blood and thereby lowers the level of glucose in the blood. Patients with type II diabetes cannot make enough insulin. As a result, the cells in their bodies do not remove enough glucose from the blood, and the level of glucose rises. Rosiglitazone often is referred to as an “insulin sensitizer” because it attaches to the insulin receptors on cells throughout the body and causes the cells to become more sensitive (more responsive) to insulin and remove more glucose from the blood. At least some insulin must be produced by the pancreas in order for rosiglitazone to work). Rosiglitazone was approved by the FDA on May 28, 1999.

GENERIC AVAILABLE: No

PRESCRIPTION: Yes

PREPARATIONS: Tablets: 2, 4, and 8 mg.

STORAGE: Tablets should be kept at room temperature, 15-30 C (59-86 F).

PRESCRIBED FOR: Rosiglitazone, combined with diet, exercise, weight control, and cessation of smoking is used for treating type II diabetes. Rosiglitazone may be used alone or in combination with other types of anti-diabetic drugs such as metformin (Glucophage) or sulfonylureas as well as insulin. Since it requires naturally-secreted insulin to be effective, rosiglitazone is not recommended for use in type I diabetes where the amount of insulin is very low or absent.

DOSING: Rosiglitazone may be taken once or twice daily, with or without meals. Daily doses range from 4 to 8 mg either with or without other antidiabetic medications. Studies do not demonstrate additional effects when more than 8mg per day are taken.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Rifampin decreases the blood concentration of rosiglitazone by increasing its breakdown in the liver. Therefore, use of rifampin may decrease the effect of rosiglitazone.

Gemfibrozil (Lopid) increases the concentration of rosiglitazone in the blood by reducing its breakdown. Therefore, rosiglitazone may increase the side effects of rosiglitazone.

PREGNANCY: There are no adequate studies of rosiglitazone in pregnant women.

NURSING MOTHERS: It is unknown if rosiglitazone is secreted in breast milk. Therefore, the safety of rosiglitazone to nursing infants also is unknown.

SIDE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS: The most common side effects seen with rosiglitazone alone or in combination with metformin are upper respiratory tract infection, headache, back pain, hyperglycemia, fatigue, sinusitis, diarrhea, and hypoglycemia. Rosiglitazone has been shown to cause mild to moderate accumulation of fluid (edema) and can lead to heart failure. Patients who already have heart failure may develop worsening symptoms with rosiglitazone. In addition, anemia may occur with rosiglitazone alone or combined with metformin. Rosiglitazone also causes increasing amounts of weight gain with increasing doses.

After Suicides over Telangana, Shutdown Hits life in Region

6ef0ff7888region After Suicides over Telangana, Shutdown Hits life in RegionHYDERABAD: Normal life in Hyderabad and nine other districts of the Telangana region came to a halt as a 48-hour shutdown called by the Joint.
Action Committee (JAC) of students began on Wednesday to protest the delay in the formation of a separate state out of Andhra Pradesh. Since Monday, two students have killed themselves over the issue.

Fresh violence was reported at the Osmania University, the nerve centre of the Telangana crisis, in Hyderabad today with police having to resort to lathicharge and injuring some students.

The state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) suspended its bus services fearing attacks by bandh supporters following which office-goers had a tough time in reaching their destinations, while shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in Telangana districts like Medak, Nizamabad, Nalgonda and Karimnagar.

Auto drivers and other private vehicle owners had a field day as commuters paid high fares demanded by them. Petrol pumps remained closed at various places in Hyderabad since late last night.

All political parties have supported the shutdown. The JAC called for a strike after two students, depressed over the delay in carving out a separate Telangana state, committed suicide.

K. Venugopal Reddy, a final year student of MCA, set himself ablaze at Osmania University here late Monday. Suvarnamma, a first year BSc student in Mahabubnagar district, set herself ablaze late Tuesday.

Tension prevailed at Osmania University campus for the second consecutive day as students continued their protest with the body of Reddy. The JAC leaders, who sat in front of the Arts College building with the body through Tuesday night, said they would not allow it to be moved unless all MPs and state legislators from the region resign in support of the Telangana statehood demand.

In an attempt to shift the body, police brought additional forces to the campus Wednesday morning.

The self-immolations triggered angry protests by students across Telangana. The students’ JAC called for a two-day shutdown Wednesday and Thursday. The politicians’ JAC, which comprises all parties including the ruling Congress, has supported the shutdown for Wednesday.

The JAC also announced that all elected representatives would submit their resignations from Wednesday and those who have already done so would press for their acceptance.

Five legislators of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and one of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) began a sit-in at the house of assembly speaker Kirankumar Reddy Tuesday night, urging him to immediately accept their resignations. The speaker, however, sought two to three days to take a decision.

With the legislators continuing their protest, the police took them into custody. They were later released.

All 39 legislators of main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) have also decided to press the speaker to accept their resignations.
