Pakistan Vs India set For Champions Trophy Clash

JOHANNESBURG: Pakistan will play against arch rivals India at the Centurion Park here today.
Pakistan vs India set for Champions TrophyA capacity crowd is expected to watch one of the most anticipated Champions Trophy matches. An India-Pakistan match is always special – a contest between two equally fanatical cricketing nations with a bitter rivalry between the sub-continental neighbours. The Indians have been far from convincing during their only warm-up match against New Zealand. The Kiwis beat them by over an hundred runs. Yuvraj Singh’s injury added further pressure on the team. Opener Gautam Gambhir has been declared fit and available for Saturday’s match. Though Pakistan’s win against West Indies in the opening Champions Trophy match was far from convincing, it was good enough to bring them with in sight of a place in the semifinals. Our front-line bowlers have been in good knick. All we need is to crack the Indian top order early,” team coach said. The last time the two teams met in and ODI was in the Asia Cup in July 2008 where Pakistan successfully chased down a target of 308 in an epic battle. Pakistan are almost certain to drop out-of-form Imran Nazir from the side in favour of Younis Khan while if the management decides in favour of Asif, Rana Naved would be rested. Victory against India would almost put Pakistan in the semifinals of the event where their performance has never been satisfactory since its inception eleven years back.

Sachin Tendulkar on Mohammad Aamer’s Hit-list

Karachi: Pakistan`s teenage pace sensation Muhammad Aamer is targetting the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar in tomorrow`s hugely anticipated Champions Trophy clash with India in Centurion, South Africa.Sachin Tendulkar on Mohammad Aamer's Hit-list

“He is a great batsman and I would love to get his wicket. I have worked out a plan on how to bowl to him but it will all depend on what sort of pitch they have at the Centurion,” Aamer said from Johannesburg.

The 18-year old left arm pacer said he has always dreamed of playing for Pakistan against India.

“I have grown up watching some memorable matches between the two teams. I have studied videos of how Wasim (Akram) bhai used to bowl to Tendulkar,” Aamer said.

“I just want to get Tendulkar`s wicket early. It would not only be a big boost for me but also for the entire team as he is a prized wicket,” he added.

Aamer who took 3 for 24 in the opening match against the West Indies said all the players were geared up for the big match.

“In the end I think it will not be about individual performances but how we play collectively. The spirits in the dressing room are high and we are looking forward to a good contest,” he said.

Wozniak advances at Quebec tennis

Wozniak advances at Quebec tennisQUEBEC CITY, Canada: Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak cruised into the semi-finals and top seeded Russia Nadia Petrova withdrew from her quarter-final match at the WTA Bell Challenge with an illness.

Instead of meeting Russia’s Petrova in the semis, Wozniak will face Hungarian Melinda Cink who was handed the win when Petrova did not start the second set because of a virus. Cink had won the first set in a tiebreak.

Third seeded Wozniak easily defeated Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-1 at the 220,000 dollar indoor hardcourt event.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic beat wild card Mattek Sands 6-3, 6-4 and eighth-seeded German Julia Goerges stopped American qualifier Lilia Osterloh 6-2, 6-4.

Safarova and Goerges will meet in Saturday’s other semi-final.

Switzerland loses doubles Without Roger Federer

Roger FedererGENOA, Italy: With Roger Federer sitting out, Switzerland lost a doubles match to Italy in a Davis Cup playoff and had its lead cut to 2-1.

Simone Bolelli and Potito Starace beat Marco Chiudinelli and Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (3) Saturday.

In Thursday’s draw, Federer was selected to team with Wawrinka, reviving the team that won the Olympic doubles title last year. But Switzerland captain Severin Luthi decided to rest Federer in favor of the 117th-ranked Chiudinelli.

“We all know he’s had a very heavy schedule over the last days and weeks, so we preferred that he rest today and be ready for tomorrow,” Luthi said.

Federer lost in five sets to Juan Martin del Potro in the U.S. Open final Monday, and he is still getting over jet leg from his trip across the Atlantic.

“For sure to have Roger on the team is always an advantage, but we knew we had a chance with this team, the Italians just played better today,” Luthi said. “(Federer) has no problem. You can expect him to play for sure tomorrow.”

Federer can seal the tie with a win over Andreas Seppi in the first of Sunday’s reverse singles matches on the red clay courts at the Valletta Cambiaso club.

The winner of the best-of-five series will return to the World Group next year.

Wawrinka beat Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 and Federer defeated Bolelli 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in Friday’s opening singles matches.

“We were talking about the solutions for (Federer) and the worst-case scenario would have been if we lose in five sets and then he would have to play three days in a row,” Luthi said. “It was better that he rested today and be ready for tomorrow.

“It’s not for sure that if Roger had played we would have won the doubles,” the Swiss captain added. “We had a strong team on the court today. It’s not like we were saying we’re giving this point to Italy. They were just stronger today.”

Italy also made a change in its doubles team, with Bolelli replacing Fabio Fognini alongside Starace.

Wawrinka was broken four times and also lost two points on his serve in the tiebreaker.

“For sure it was not my best doubles today,” Wawrinka said, adding that he and Chiudinelli struggled to play in unison, having never played together in the Davis Cup.

The Italians were pleased by the decision to rest Federer.

“We were a bit surprised he wasn’t playing. But it gave us a better chance of winning,” Bolelli said. “We played well and showed that without Federer we’re capable of winning in straight sets.”
