WASHINGTON: Southern Alberta continued to feel winter’s wrath Saturday as storms pelted the region for a second straight day.
The storm that dumped as much as 20 cm of snow to parts of Alberta late Friday continued through most of the morning. Today’s forecast is calling for more snow and for temperatures to drop to as low as -30 C with the wind chill.
Environment Canada expects the storms to taper off over the course of the day, though the Southeastern part of the province can still expect an additional five to 10 cm of snow today.
Yesterday’s squalls forced highway closures and flight cancellations in Calgary and Edmonton, as well as surrounding areas.
Many flights out of Calgary have been cancelled, particularly early afternoon flights to Kelowna and to U.S. destinations such as Seattle and Portland. Some morning flights departed, but delays of at least a half-hour were common.
Some flights out of Edmonton have been delayed, though the majority of domestic and international flights have been able to take off.
Winter storm warnings had been in effect for all points south of Red Deer as well as western Saskatchewan earlier on in the day, though some have since been lifted. Forecasters expect temperatures in Calgary and Edmonton to stay around the -15 C degree mark until Tuesday.
There’s no easing into winter also for West Michigan, our first real snowfall plunges us right into the season.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids upgraded the Winter Weather Advisory to a Winter Storm Warning for part of West Michigan.
As usual the snow will be heaviest between US-31 and US-131. The prime locations for the heaviest snow will be from Muskegon to just south of Holland where more than 6 inches are possible.
The warnings and advisories are in effect until 4 PM Friday. At that time the more persistent snow will begin to diminish but the lake enhanced snow will continue into Saturday.
The NWS issued this additional statement about the storm.
