Indian Generals Guilty of Rs 290-crore Scam

Indian Generals Guilty of Rs 290-crore ScamIndia: Indian Generals Guilty of Rs 290-crore Scam, In one of the biggest corruption scandals to hit the Indian Army; now it’s clear that three top generals were involved.
The case involves 70 acres of land, owned by the Army, in Siliguri in North Bengal. An army inquiry has found that the three generals colluded to lease this land to a group of businessmen for a project worth 290 crore. The same project had been rejected by their predecessors on security grounds, pointing out that any building on this land would overlook helipads and other sensitive army installations.
The biggest offender is Lieutenant General Avadesh Prakash, the Military Secretary, one of the eight Principal Staff Officers at Army Headquarters. The court of inquiry says he took undue interest in the Siliguri project, possibly because of old links with businessman Dilip Agarwal. Prakash then pressured the then-Commander of the 33 Corps, Lieutenant General PK Rath to clear the 70-acre. And then there’s Lieutenant General Ramesh Halgali. At the time of the scam, he was a Major General, and deputy to Rath. He’s been found guilty on administrative grounds – not giving his boss the correct advice.
None of them faces any punishment yet as this was only a court of inquiry. The Army Headquarters and Ministry of Defence will have to take a final call whether one or more of them could face a court martial once the report reaches Delhi from the Eastern Command.

Suicide Attack In Somali Fourteen Killed

Suicide Attack In Somali Fourteen KilledMOGADISHU: Twin suicide bombings ripped through the headquarters of African Union peacekeepers in Somalia Thursday, killing 14 soldiers in the deadliest such attack against the force.

“At least two bombs” exploded at the force’s headquarters in a fortified compound at Mogadishu airport, the AU said in a statement, which condemned what it called a “barbaric attack” in which at least 15 other soldiers were wounded. Rebels claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Among those who died is the AMISOM deputy commander Major General Juvenal Niyonguruza,” who was about to complete his tour of duty in Somalia, Ugandan army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Felix Kulayigye said.

Ten Burundi soldiers were killed, the country’s army spokesman Lazare Nduhayo told media, raising an ealier toll of nine to 14.

“Five soldiers died on the spot and five others succumbed to their injuries,” he said in Bujumbura.

The peacekeepers’ commander, General Nathan Mugisha, who took up his post only last month, suffered minor injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the attack were unclear Thursday but witnesses said the bombers entered the compound using two vehicles with United Nations markings.

Kulayigye, who said Mugisha was about to host negotiations at the compound, said the bombers had got in “with a group that was coming for talks”. He did not elaborate.

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon condemned the blast in the “strongest terms.” Somali government spokesman Abdulkadir Walayo condemned the “terrorist” attack, which he said was carried out by “two criminals using previously robbed UN cars.”

Sacking Chief Justice Chaudhry was a mistake: Musharraf

Former Pakistani President General (r) Pervez MusharrafSacking Chief Justice Chaudhry was a mistake: Former Pakistani President General (r) Pervez Musharraf

WASHINGTON : Former President of Pakistan General (r) Pervez Musharraf has confessed that he committed a mistake by removing Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry from the office of Chief Justice of Pakistan, reports www.mastifunda.com .

“Now, after seeing the incidents following his dismissal from the office I realized that I shouldn’t have done that,” former military ruler told the attendees of his lecture held Thursday at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas.

“It was a mistake to send the reference against him to Supreme Judicial Council, though it was my constitutional and legal obligation… The reference resulted in a chaos in the country… Probably I won’t commit such things in future,” he was quoted as saying in front of an audience of more than 2,000 people.

“Neither had I any personal enmity with Justice Chaudhry when i removed him nor have I at the moment,” Musharraf said, adding that he had been left alone with no other choice but to depose CJP in order to prevent the democratic system of that time.

Gunman Attacks on Gay Centre in Israeli

City councillor Yaniv Weizman: ‘It’s a big shock in Tel Aviv, one of the most liberal and free cities’
Gunman Attacks on Gay Centre in Israeli
A lone gunman has killed two people and wounded at least 10 at a gay support centre in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv before escaping.

Most of the victims were gay teenagers, who were meeting at the centre on Nachmani street when the gunman entered and started firing indiscriminately.

The black-clad man is still at large and police have ordered the temporary closure of all gay clubs in the city.

Gay leaders say it is Israel’s worst-ever hate crime against the community.
Witnesses said the gunman fired in all directions with a handgun.

At one point, three deaths were being reported but later accounts spoke only of two fatalities – that of a young man and a young woman.

The shootings took place at the headquarters of the local lesbian and gay rights associationAnon Shabtie, who works at the Evita gay bar close to the centre, told BBC Radio 5 Live that the gunman had attacked a place which helped young gay people:
“We have a centre for people who want to go out of the closet or get support from the community and they come there every day and there are people supporting them.

“And unfortunately on Saturday evening there are teenagers coming there and they were like I don’t know many guys sitting there with a guy who help them.

“And then the guy came with a helmet on his head and he was shooting them without any reason.”

Hundreds of lesbian and gay Israelis held a rally and lit candles in Tel Aviv in protest at the shooting.

One woman said she was “terrified, shocked, surprised, amazed” by the attack “because it was so unexpected”.

Yaron Arad, who works at a nearby hotel, said the gay community was part of the city.

“We know that Tel Aviv has a very lively gay community with plenty of activities going around,” he told the BBC.

“That’s actually the surprising issue, there is not at all any homophobic activity in Tel Aviv.

“Jerusalem does not naturally accept the gay community but here in Tel Aviv it’s different, totally different story. A lot of parties, a lot of gay people having fun here. That’s why it’s so shocking what’s happened here tonight.”
