Three-Time Grand Slam Champion Maria Sharapova,Davydenko Out Of Miami

Three-Time Grand Slam Champion Maria Sharapova,Davydenko Out Of MiamiMIAMI : Three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova will miss the Sony Ericsson Open, as will women’s world number two Dinara Safina and 2008 men’s champion Nikolay Davydenko, organizers said Wednesday.

The Miami tournament is the second of prestigious back-to-back hardcourt tournaments in the United States, coming immediately after this week’s event at Indian Wells, California.

Sharapova, who won the WTA title in Memphis in February, had been slated to play in Miami for the first time since 2007.

But an MRI exam on the sore right elbow that hindered her as she made a third-round exit in Indian Wells showed a bone bruise that is likely to sideline the Russian for three to six weeks.

Safina, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, remains sidelined by the back injury that forced her out of the Australian Open.

Davydenko is out with a broken left wrist. He had played one match at Indian Wells and then pulled out after an MRI revealed the wrist he injured in Rotterdam last month was, in fact, fractured.

8 Injured in Bangladesh, India Border Fight

DHAKA: Eight Bangladeshi villagers were injured after border guards from Bangladesh and India traded gunfire over the weekend, a Bangladeshi commander said Monday.476bde3ab6fight 8 Injured in Bangladesh, India Border Fight
Maj. Kohinoor Alam, a border guard official of Bangladesh, said the skirmish occurred Sunday after Indian border security forces opened fire on Bangladeshi villagers along northeastern Jaintapur frontier.
He said the injured were being treated for bullet wounds, but none of them are in serious condition.
Alam said the Indian guards fired as the Bangladeshi villagers tried to prevent dozens of Indian villagers from fishing in a pond inside Bangladesh territory. Bangladeshi guards responded with fire.
The area is 120 miles (192 kilometers) northeast of Dhaka.
Bangladesh and India share a 2,500-mile (4,000 kilometer) porous border. Clashes between the border guards of the two neighbors are common, often over villagers crossing over into each other’s territory for farming or fishing.
The latest clash occurred three days after heads of both border forces held talks in New Delhi, India and agreed to scale down violence.

Plans to shift out World Cup from subcontinent – reports

World Cup 2011World Cup 2011, Security concern in India are raising higher and higher as with several cricketers in line to pull-out from the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to terror threats. With the prevailing concerns reports are also floating for the contingency plans to shift the next year’s World Cup from the Indian subcontinent to Australia and New Zealand.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan has indicated that there were plans to move the World Cup from India to Australia or New Zealand if the security situation deteriorated. “You cannot move the timing of the tournament, in March-April, so really there’s only Australia, New Zealand and South Africa who could host it,” Vaughan was quoted as saying in The Australian.

“By tightening the security measures around the teams, we somehow have to make it safe. Otherwise the sport will struggle to survive if we cannot find a solution.”

But International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive officer Haroon Lorgat said they will do everything to keep the World Cup in India and world cricket would not let the sport be derailed by terrorism, as has happened in Pakistan. “The World Cup is the big piece of work that we have to deliver and we intend to do so,” Lorgat said.

“The whole issue of security is dynamic, but we will assess it very carefully and implement whatever measures are necessary to ensure safety and security. I do not share the same concerns for India as Pakistan.”
