(Punjab)MOHALI : Workers levelling a piece of land in a Punjab village discovered three live bombs buried under the earth for many years, police said on Wednesday.
According to the police, two bombs weighed five kilograms each and the third one-and-a-half kilograms. The bombs were covered with sacks of sand. Army officials were called for assistance.
“This land belongs to an NRI, Bhupinder Singh, and the levelling work was being supervised by caretaker Gurnam Singh. The army bomb disposal squad has taken the bombs to defuse them,” police officer Lakhwinder Singh said.
He added: “This land was once the property of the Indian Army. There is a strong probability that the bombs date back to 1971. Although very old, experts said they can still cause huge destruction if they explode.”
Villagers said that in the past too many grenades and bombs had been found in the area.
Villager Gurbax Brar said: “In one incident a few labourers lost their lives when a bomb accidentally exploded. The district administration has done nothing.”

The explosion occurred in German Bakery close to the Osho Ashram, a mediation center of a famed Indian guru, often frequented by foreigners.

KUALA LUMPUR: A police offer says 10 people have been killed and two injured after a bus skidded off a highway and crashed in northern Malaysia.
The bus spun out of control early Saturday in northern Perak state and slammed into a metal barrier that tore through the lower tier of the double-decker vehicle.
A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press, says the cause of the accident was not immediately known.
The bus was heading from central Selangor state to the northernmost state of Perlis bordering Thailand.
Malaysia has a high-quality highway system with a speed limit of 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour. But speeding is common and many drivers often do not follow safety procedures.

BAGHDAD: Police and health officials in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar say a suicide bomber killed a local council member and three of his guards.
A police officer in the city says the leader of the local council was driving in a nine-vehicle convoy when a suicide bomber walked up to the convoy and blew himself up Monday.
A doctor at a local hospital confirmed the account. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Tal Afar is about 90 miles (150 kilometers) east of the Syrian border, in Ninevah province. Insurgents frequently staged bombings there in past years.
BAGHDAD: A bomb in a school in the Baghdad Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City killed five people and wounded 34 on Monday, the majority of them children returning to class after a Muslim holiday, security and health officials said.
“Five people died and 34 were injured in the attack on the school,” a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The toll was confirmed by Sadr City Hospital.
The vast majority of the casualties from the 1:10 pm (1010 GMT) blast were pupils at the Abaa Dhar School, a primary school for boys in the Iraqi capital’s northeast.
The explosion, which left a crater around four metres (13 feet) in diameter, struck just outside the main entrance of the school and severely damaged three nearby houses.
TIKRIT: Attacks in Iraq on Thursday killed eight people, including a senior anti-terror officer who led a key fight back against Al-Qaeda in his province, police said.

KARACHI, Pakistan: Four people were shot dead, including two policemen and a child, in operation against criminal gangs in Lyari Kalakot area of Karachi on Sunday. Police captured large quantity of weapons during raid at a godown in the locality.
Police on an indication of an arrested murder accused conducted raid at a godown, during which criminals lobbed a hand grenade and opened firing at the police party, leaving two cops dead on the spot.
District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sarwar Commando told reporters that the drug and ammunition dump belonged to the notorious Rehman Dakait gang in Lyari.
Police said two outlaws have also been killed in the shootout, adding they had arrested three accused as well.
Police have seized a light machinegun, seven Kalashnikovs, two repeaters, two pistols, grenade, eight walkie-talkies and hundreds of bullets from the godown in raid.

KARACHI: The main character of the Lyari gang war — Rehman Baloch alias Rehman Dakait — and his three accomplices were killed in an encounter with the police in Steel Town here late on Sunday night, police said.
SP Investigations, East Zone, Chaudhry Aslam, had received a tip-off that Rehman Dakait, along with his three associates, was coming to Karachi from Hyderabad through the Link Road in Steel Town. The police took positions there and a shootout took place when the gangsters arrived. As a result, Rehman Dakait and his three associates – Nazir alias Palla, Aurangzaib alias Babu and Aqil – were injured. They were later shifted to the Jinnah Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.
Three Kalashnikovs rifles and three hand grenades were recovered from the spot. Rehman Dakait was wanted by the police in over 300 cases of murder, kidnappings for ransom, diesel smuggling, etc. His name was included in the CID’s Red Book and he had a head money of Rs 5 million.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Waseem Ahmed said the man killed was Rehman Dakait, who had been shot dead in an encounter with the Bin Qasim police. The bodies of Rehman Dakait and others had been shifted to the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre, the CCPO said.
Besides, the police had set Rs 5 million bounty over his head, the senior policeman said. The CCPO said large contingents of police and rangers had been deployed in Lyari to avoid any untoward incident following the killing of Rehman Dakait.
The Sindh government had launched an operation against his gang, which came out virtually unscathed by the last operation in the area compared to its rival group. Over 250 families had to leave Lyari due to the gang war between the groups of Rehman Dakait and Arshad Pappu.
