Chile Earthquake March 11, VALPARAISO: The largest aftershock since Chile’s devastating earthquake rocked the South American country Thursday minutes before the inauguration of President Sebastian Pinera.
The 7.2-magnitude aftershock was stronger than the Jan. 12 quake that devastated the Haitian capital. It happened along the same fault zone as Chile’s magnitude-8.8 quake on Feb. 27, said geophysicist Don Blakeman at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado.
“When we get quakes in the 8 range, we would expect to see maybe a couple of aftershocks in the 7 range,” he said.
Blakeman said Chile now can expect to feel “aftershocks of the aftershock.”
“It’s not a sign of anything different happening. But what does occur when you get these large aftershocks, typically we have a whole series of aftershocks again,” Blakeman said.
The temblor rocked buildings and shook windows in the capital, and provoked nervous smiles among dignitaries arriving for the ceremony at the congressional building in coastal Valparaiso. Bolivian President Evo Morales seemed briefly disoriented and Peru’s Alan Garcia joked that it gave them “a moment to dance.”
Buildings emptied and streets crowded with people seeking higher ground in coastal Constitucion, a city wiped out by the tsunami that followed the quake. Pinera planned to visit the city shortly after his swearing-in.

NEW DELHI INDAI: The Netherlands have advanced to the semifinals of the field hockey World Cup despite losing to South Korea 2-1 on Tuesday.
The Netherlands had a better goal difference than South Korea, which will miss its first semifinals in three World Cups.
The Dutch will play Pool B winner Australia on Thursday, while Pool A winner Germany will meet England in the other semi.
The Koreans face Spain in a playoff for fifth.

NEW DELHI INDIA: With their hopes of a semi-final place receding fast, Pakistan need to force a big win as they take on the weakest Pool B side South Africa in the Hockey World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium today.
Like their sub-continental cousins India, Pakistan first have to win both their remaining games to keep alive their chances, which would also depend on the results of other games in the pool.
Having conceded 22 goals without earning a single point in their three games, South Africa have turned out to be the favourite whipping boys in the tournament and provide a good opportunity to Pakistan to find their bearings after the 2-5 defeat against England in an exciting game Thursday.
England now top the pool with nine points, having won all their matches, followed by while Australia and Spain with six each. Pakistan and India are on three points.
For Pakistan, the road ahead would be anything but smooth, as what looks like a relatively easy game against the African team would be followed by the match against strong title contenders, Australia, who have been on a song after the shock defeat by England in the opener.
For Pakistan, forward Shakeel Abbasi has sparkled in the Cup, and would have to take an extra load today to ensure an emphatic victory for the four-time winners. They lost to India 1-4 in the opener before getting past Spain 2-1, and then went down to the in-form England.
