INDIAN WELLS: Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-6 (4) to reach the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open in his first tournament since returning from a six-week injury layoff.

Nadal used every inch of the court in beating Berdych for the sixth consecutive time. He mixed topspin with power off the forehand side, slipped in drop shots, and painted the corners with smashes.

Nadal won the final three points of the tiebreaker that ended with Berdych netting a backhand. The Spaniard leaped for joy, trading the snarl he wore through most of the match for a smile.

Nadal was hampered by knee injuries last summer that continued into the Australian Open in January, when he was forced to retire in the quarterfinals.

Jelena Jankovic rallied from a 2-4 second-set deficit to beat Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-4 and reach the women’s semifinals.

Jankovic won the final four games of the match, twice breaking Kleybanova, to extend her best showing of the year. Jankovic made the semifinals at Indian Wells in 2008, and went on to finish the year ranked No. 1 in the world.

In the semifinals, Jankovic will play Australian Samantha Stosur, a 6-3, 7-6 (9) winner over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.

Their match ended awkwardly when Stosur challenged Sanchez’s serve that had been called good. Sanchez thought Stosur was questioning the Aussie’s return, and believed her challenge request wasn’t made in time.

“She thought maybe it was a first serve or she got confused about something, but I wanted to challenge the serve and the serve was out, so it’s a second serve,” Stosur said. “It’s a little bit more big a deal because it was match point.”

Sanchez was also confused about the score in the tiebreaker.

Stosur has yet to drop a set in four matches, and is projected to crack the top 10 for the first time in the WTA Tour rankings.

No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who also hasn’t dropped a set, will meet in the other semifinal.

Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia gave himself an early birthday present by defeating Juan Monaco of Argentina 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, setting up a semifinal against Nadal. Ljubicic turns 31 on Friday.

Croatian veteran Ivan Ljubicic ousted a weary world number two Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-3 as defending champion Rafael Nadal booked his quarter-final berth at the BNP Paribas Open.

While third-seeded Nadal advanced on Wednesday with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over big-serving American John Isner, Djokovic couldn’t keep pace with the blistering serves and clean groundstrokes of Ljubicic, a former world number 3 now ranked 26th in the world.

World number four Andy Murray secured his quarter-final slot with ease as Spain’s Nicolas Almagro retired while trailing with an apparent left ankle injury. Murray led 6-2, 1-0 when Almagro called it quits after receiving treatment on court at the end of the first set.

The tournament has now lost its top two men’s seeds, after world number one Roger Federer was stunned by Marcos Baghdatis in the third round on Tuesday. That left Spain’s Nadal as the highest-ranked player to make it into the quarters as he withstood a barrage of 22 aces from the 24-year-old American Isner.

ISLAMABAD PAKISTAN : Former Pakistan players, on Thursday, paid tribute to coach Bob Woolmer, whose tragic death during the ODI World Cup in the West Indies exactly three years ago had left everybody stunned.

“On the occasion of the third death anniversary of Bob Woolmer (March 18, 2010) PCB wishes to pay tribute to a man who did so much for Pakistan cricket. Woolmer’s progressive coaching methods made a huge impact on the game of cricket.

“Woolmer was a distinguished cricketer and a coach whose contributions to the game and especially Pakistan cricket will never be forgotten. More importantly Woolmer was an excellent human being, who enriched the lives of all those that he came in contact with,” a PCB statement said.

“He is and will always be missed. The entire Pakistan cricket community’s thoughts and prayers are with the Woolmer family,” it said.

Woolmer died on March 18 just a few hours after Pakistan’s shocking defeat at the hands of minnows Ireland and elimination from the mega-event.

“What happened was tragic. Bob’s death came as a big shock for all of us even before we could recover from the defeat to Ireland,” cricket365 quoted former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as saying.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, who was the Pakistan captain in the World Cup and worked closely with Woolmer, said that the period spent in Jamaica after Woolmer’s death was the worst of his life.

“We were treated like murder suspects and all sorts of accusations were made without anyone realizing how close the players were to Woolmer,” Inzamam said.

“We worked as a team with Woolmer and there is no doubt that he was one of the best coaches I have seen in my career,” he added.

Danish Kaneria, who was a member of the World Cup squad, said that there was no doubt that Woolmer’s “shocking” death left the players shattered.

“He took it (the defeat) hard but we never expected it to end in his death. It was shocking for all of us,” Kaneria said.

He said Woolmer meant a lot to Pakistan cricket and this could be seen in the way as the Pakistan Cricket Board had also named a section of the national academy after him.

The Pakistan board also issued a tribute on the occasion of Woolmer’s third death anniversary pointing out he had done a lot for Pakistan cricket.

Pakistan’s top ranking squash player Aamir Atlas Khan got off to winning start in the Malaysian Open when he beat Umer Abdul Aziz of Egypt 3-1 at Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Aamir dropped the first game before staging a fight back to register 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9 victory over his opponent in match lasting just eight minute under an hour. Aamir will face world no. 1 Egypt’s Rami Ishwar in quarter final.
