Australia Beat Pakistan by 135 Runs in 4th ODI

Australia 277/8 (50 ov)
Pakistan 142 all out (37.5 ov)
Australia won the 4th ODI against Pakistan by 125 runs at the WACA Ground on Friday. Chasing Australia target of 277 runs, Salman Butt fell for a duck to Ryan Harris in the first over. Kamran Akmal made 17 runs before Peter Siddle claimed his wicket, thanks to the safe hands of Brad Haddin. Harris claimed his second wicket, dismissing Younus Khan for six runs. Haddin took the catch off Harris’s bowling. And Siddle broke through with Mohammad Yousuf, with another fine catch from Haddin behind the wicket.

Earlier, Mike Hussey continued his prolific summer and Nathan Hauritz displayed his all-round credentials in brutal fashion as Australia posted an imposing 8-277.
Hussey posted a composed 67 off 75 balls but it was Hauritz who stole the show as he made his maiden half-century. Hauritz spanked four sixes and a four in his entertaining and unbeaten knock of 53 off 39 balls after coming to the crease in the 40th over with Australia precariously placed at 6-190.
Earlier, Cameron White (44), makeshift opener Brad Haddin (32) and Ricky Ponting (30) chipped in with handy contributions but couldn’t go on with the job.
Hussey saved his Test career this summer with a solid tally of runs against the West Indies and Pakistan and his form in the one-day game continues to blossom. His latest knock to his series tally to 180 runs at an average of 60.
Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif finished with tidy figures of 3-42 from 10 overs while spinner Shahid Afridi (1-44 off 10) and Saeed Ajmal (2-55) escaped much of the late carnage.
Pakistan’s fielding woes came back to haunt them early when Asif put down a return catch low to the ground when Haddin was on just one.
While that chance went begging, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal pulled off a spectacular catch diving full length to his left to dismiss Shaun Marsh for 12.
Haddin went for one heave too many as Rana Naved ul-Hasan sent a straight delivery into his stumps and Australia slipped to 3-77 in the 15th over when Michael Clarke was run out for 10 after Ponting called for a risky single.
Ponting departed in bizarre fashion when Kamran Akmal snared one of the most unorthodox catches he will ever take off the bowling of spinner Afridi.
Ponting’s thick edge sailed into the chest of Akmal but the wicketkeeper kept his cool, throwing his arms up so the ball couldn’t deflect away before trapping it in between his legs.
Akmal almost spilled the ball when he attempted to grab it with his gloves but managed to finally bring it under control, with Ponting given his marching orders after a brief consult between the two umpires.
White once again loomed as the saviour as he made his way into the 40s but was sent packing when he holed out in the deep to Ajmal but Hussey and Hauritz ensured the runs flowed freely in the dying overs, with their 80-run partnership coming off just 56 balls.

Pakistan Beats Kiwis by 141 Runs to Level Series

Pakistan Beats Kiwis by 141 Runs to Level SeriesWELLINGTON: Pakistan Beats Kiwis by 141 Runs to Level Series, Pakistan thrashed New Zealand by 141 runs in second cricket Test match to level the series by 1-1 here at Wellington on Sunday.

Watch Live Cricket

New Zealand were all-out for 263 runs in their second innings falling short of 141 runs of 405-run target.

Muhammad Asif claimed five wickets in second innings, 9 wickets in match and was awarded man of the match.

New Zealand, chasing an unlikely 405 to win, were bowled out for 263, Mohammad Asif doing most of the damage with 5-67.

Ross Taylor top-scored for the Black Caps with 97.

Watch Live Cricket

Pakistan, who lost the first Test by 32 runs, led by 165 in the first innings in this Test after bowling New Zealand out for 99.

But they then teased the home side with their own batting collapses before reasserting control of the second Test on day three yesterday.

Their second innings folded between lunch and tea for 239 – seven wickets toppled for 42 runs – although it barely offered a glimmer of hope to a New Zealand side who managed only 99 in their first innings.

The Kiwis were left chasing 405 to win and by stumps were 3-70, still 335 adrift.

The only consolation was Ross Taylor’s continued presence at the crease.

If New Zealand are to complete the fourth highest successful run chase in Test history and eclipse their previous best pursuit of 5-324 against Pakistan at Christchurch in 1994, much will rely on New Zealand’s only in-form batsman.

Taylor was not out 15 and Peter Fulton has 12, although both had lives on 13 and three respectively as Pakistan’s catching woes continue.

With two days remaining, yet again the exploits of a weary bowling attack – deprived of first-Test hero Shane Bond – appear destined to go unrewarded.

Chris Martin and Iain O’Brien added four wicket hauls to Daryl Tuffey and Daniel Vettori’s identical returns in the first innings.

Martin improved from 0-44 to 4-52 as Pakistan deteriorated, O’Brien bristled with aggression throughout to record four for 66 – sterling service considering the duo barely had their feet up between bowling assignments after New Zealand’s first innings lasted only 36.5 overs.

Medium pacer Grant Elliott also made a belated and inspired arrival in the 72nd over, having Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal caught behind with his fifth and sixth deliveries.

Martin also found himself on a hat-trick with the second new ball by ending captain Mohammad Yousuf’s stout resistance after a failed leg before wicket appeal was overturned. Tailender Danish Kaneria then snicked to Taylor at slip.

Yousuf produced the only bedrock innings of the day — and one New Zealand’s remaining batsmen will need to emulate if Friday’s third test in Napier is not to be a decider.

Yousuf took his time making 83 from 200 deliveries, a top score and 30th test fifty made between the 17th and 86th overs.

With the benefit of a 229-run advantage when play began, Yousuf and Misbah-ul-Haq were in no hurry.

Since combining late yesterday they added 77 for the third wicket in 35 overs at a snail paced 2.20 runs per over.

O’Brien was instrumental in accelerating Pakistan’s scoring rate. Misbah’s demise caught at the wicket for 33 was the catalyst for the continuation of Umar Akmal’s stunning debut series.

Only five boundaries were recorded in the 23 overs before the 19-year-old arrived and instantly set about mangling Daniel Vettori’s figures.

The New Zealand captain conceded just 21 runs from his first 17 overs; Umar then proceeded to crack 27 from Vettori’s next four through a trio of boundaries, brace of sixes and three singles.

Umar passed fifty for the third time in his four-test career in just 32 balls though his audacity got the better of him a ball later when a lofted drive was collected by Vettori retreating at deep mid-off.

He thudded his pad in disgust but still has the consolation of 302 runs in the series at 75.50.

Akmal Brothers save the day for Pakistan

Umar AkmalPakistan after getting reduced to a disastrous 85 for 5 fought back superbly through Umar Akmal and his older brother Kamran Akmal to end Day 3 at 307 for 8. Umar Akmal went onto score a century on Test Debut! The Akmal Brothers put on a terrific counter punch with a partnership of 176 for the sixth wicket. New Zealand still hold the game in their control as Pakistan have a deficit of 122 runs and there are a couple of days left in this Dunedin match. Pakistan would be looking for some weather intervention to keep New Zealand away from a victory.

New Zealand resumed Day 3 at 404 for 8 and could add a further 25 runs before getting bowled out. Mohammad Asif finished with 4 for 108 in 34 overs. Pakistan in their first innings got off to a bad start when Khurram Manzoor dragged his forcing shot onto his stumps off Chris Martin in the 4th over. By lunch, Pakistan lost their other opener Imran Farhat who challenged an lbw decision through a review but in vain. Martin was again the successful bowler to take this wicket and Pak went to lunch at 50 for 2.

Pakistan had more trouble in store in the afternoon session as they lost three more wickets to put New Zealand in a winning position. Shane Bond bowled at his very best to pick the wickets of Skipper Mohammad Yousuf (17), Fawad Alam (29) and Shoaib Malik (2) in the space of around 4 overs. Yousuf played an uppish drive back to Bond who came up with a forward diving catch. Fawad Alam and Shoaib Malik both fell to rising deliveries.

At 85 for 5, the Kiwis were right on top of Pakistan but the Akmal brothers had different ideas. Umar Akmal initiated the counter attack by slogging Vettori over mid wicket for a six and his older brother Kamran joined the fight in same vein. For the next 40 overs or so, the Kiwi attack was put to sword before Kamran Akmal threw his wicket by giving the charge to Vettori but only to edge his big shot to slip. The wicket keeper batsman scored a superb 82 from 136 balls with 11 fours and a six.

Towards the fag end of the day’s play, Umar Akmal got dismissed getting caught at deep point after a brilliant 129 (from 160 balls with 21 fours and 2 sixes). Vettori rounded off the day with the wicket of Umar Gul.
