British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was greeted with shouts from protesters accusing him of being a war criminal when he arrived at the public inquiry into Britain’s role in the Iraq war.
Brown insisted that he was provided with all details by his predecessor Tony Blair on the effects and consequences of the Iraq war.
Brown added that his own intelligence briefings had convinced him that Iraq was a threat that “had to be dealt with”.
Brown reminded that if the international community could not act together over Iraq, Mr Brown said, he feared the “new world order we were trying to create would be put at risk”.
Al-Qaeda is threatening to kill Iraqis, who vote in Sunday’s (March 7, 2010) elections.
The threat message was posted on Al-Qadea’s website, the warning message proclaimed a 6am-to-6pm curfew “throughout Iraq and especially in Sunni areas.” Sunnis boycotted the 2005 elections but are expected to turn out in large number for this year’s vote, which has already begun for Iraqis living overseas. Anyone who violates the ban will “expose himself to the anger of Allah,” the terror group claimed.
Hailed as one of the biggest events in the society calendar, March signals the return of the Edinburgh Charity Fashion Show. Organised by Edinburgh University students, the show is now in its 7th year, having raised a staggering quarter of a million pounds for charity to date. Last year alone over £60,000 was raised for charities such as Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre.
The charities being supported this year include Marie Curie, The Scottish Association for Mental Health and Poppyscotland. Tickets for the shows, held at the Corn Exchange, are available for both nights: Friday 19 March is the student night, with a VIP night being held on the 20th. Afterparties for both nights will be held at the Opal Lounge nightclub, with specially made cocktails on the menu. The VIP night will also see the return of the infamous auction (past items have included Sting’s guitar). Each year, the shows are organised around a central theme, which this year is a surrealist spectacle of magical reality. The models, who are all students, have showcased some of the finest fashions by designers such as Luella and Vivienne Westwood in previous events. Martha Braddle, one of this year’s models, says that the surreal theme has been a fun concept to incorporate into both the models’ clothing and the choreography of the catwalk. In addition to the big names, promising students at the Edinburgh College of Art are being given a chance to showcase their talent, meaning this year’s show is a must-see event.

The four of hearts writer, The Four of Hearts in 1938, The Four of Hearts is a zany sequel to The Devil to Pay. Ellery finally meets his employer, the young Jacques Butcher, colloquially known as Boy Wonder, executive vice-president of production at Magna Studios. Unfortunately, as Ellery begins his work on his first screen play, an elaborate publicity stunt for the new production is derailed by a double murder. As Ellery begins his investigation, he finds himself crossing swords again with Inspector Glucke of the Los Angeles Police Department. And perhaps what is most unexpected, Ellery himself becomes enamored with a popular, strikingly beautiful, Hollywood gossip columnist.
Despite the hilarious caricature of movie stars, producers, screen writers, and gossip columnists, the murder mystery itself is still quite good and the puzzle will challenge even the astute reader. Ellery’s deductions are impressive.
The Four of Hearts has been reissued by HarperCollins. Sometimes an early Pocket Book edition can be found. Another possibility is a 2000 publication by Four Walls Eight Windows of the three Ellery Queen stories that take place in Hollywood under the title The Hollywood Murders.
